We aren’t upgrade people. We like to buy an appliance that lasts ten years. We repair and care for it and then when it finally gives up, we replace the appliance with another that lasts years. That’s why we bought our Rancillio Silvia back in 2013. We loved that machine, and with a little care (and a few replacement parts) it brewed at least two coffees a day for over ten years. And it’s still going.
We aren’t normally upgrade people. But we are spreadsheet people and we did some calculations into the cost of owning the Silvia which brewed on average three coffees a day, compared to buying two coffees on business days only (we’d probably drink less coffee if we had to buy it). We deep-dived into bean price fluctuations, energy costs, and milk price increases over the decade. It turns out we saved more than $13K over ten years. The Silvia is still going, but maybe this justifies a new machine.
Are we becoming upgrade people? Maybe. What I do know is that we are definitely tactile people. We like cooking with a cast iron pot, playing music from a turntable, touching wood furniture, and pressing real buttons and clicky switches in our car. Why am I telling you this nonsense? Because the experience we’ve had with our new ECM Mechanika VI Slim is very satisfying. The machine is so beautifully finished and solidly built with delightful mechanical actions; nothing wobbles, everything is steel. The brew lever and the knobs feel like the belong on a steam train – everything is so overengineered and we love it!
We are upgrade people. And we are drinking too much coffee. I’m an OK coffee maker, I’m not great, just an enthusiastic amateur. But even I can put together a flat white in ninety seconds with the heat exchanger. And my daughters fight me to make my coffee using the ECM. They are kids they don’t drink coffee, but they love making it. This machine has changed us. As upgrade people, I believe we will soon replace our old Cunill grinder.
Thank you to Eastlink for the great price on a great machine. We ordered it online on Sunday evening, then had a lovely call on Monday morning from Eastlink congratulating us and confirming our address. Then on Wednesday it arrived at our door in Canberra. Amazing!
Keep up the good work and we’ll be back next year to upgrade our grinder … because that’s the kind of people we are.
